The Center for Litigation and Courts and the Pound Civil Justice Institute cosponsored an academic conference on the UC Law SF campus on November 6-7, 2021. The conference, titled “The Internet and the Law: Legal Challenges in the New Digital Age,” brought academic presenters and practitioner commentators together to address such pressing topics as internet commerce and products liability, litigation and artificial intelligence, obtaining and using digital evidence, internet data protection and privacy, social media and the First Amendment, and more.
Scott Dodson, a distinguished professor of law at UC Law SF and the Director of the Center for Litigation and Courts, worked closely with the Pound leadership team to develop the program and invite speakers. “The conference topics are so timely,” he said. “Social-media regulation and the First Amendment, for example, is on everyone’s mind. And it’s not like these topics are just flashes in the pan. How litigation will respond to—and incorporate—artificial intelligence is a question that is going to be around for a long time.”
Dodson believes the conference’s twin themes of litigation and technology reflect the Center’s core expertise and geographic location in San Francisco. “The topics covered are on the minds of the folks in Silicon Valley,” he said.
The presenters published their conference papers in Hastings Law Journal, the flagship law journal at UC Law SF. “We are so excited to be publishing the conference papers,” said LeeAnna Bowman-Carpio, the editor-in-chief of Hastings Law Journal. “These are top scholars in the field.”
